Nigerian PhD gets $2.8 million grant for breast cancer therapy – http://bit.ly/phdboobs

I won’t pretend to know what VN/14-1 is… or how it may be used in the fight against breast cancer. I will leave that to smarter people – like Vincent Njar, a professor of medicinal chemistry and oncopharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University.

Mr. Njar just got a whole heap of money to study how VN/14-1 and related analogs can help rid the world of breast cancer.

Here is a lead in to the article by DAVID HARE:

A Lansdale resident stands at the forefront in developing a treatment for breast cancer.

Vincent Njar, a professor of medicinal chemistry and oncopharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University, was recently awarded a $2.8 million grant by the National Institutes of Health for a project titled “Development of VN/14-1 and Related Analogs for Breast Cancer Therapy.”

The grant is good for five years.

VN/14-1 is “a multi-target retinoic acid metabolism blocking agent” invented by Njar. He said the goal of the NIH-funded project is “to develop new, metabolically more stable and efficacious analogs of VN/14-1″ for breast cancer therapy.

The grant itself he said is “exceptional” in that the enthusiasm level for the application was in the exceptional range.

Born in Nigeria, Njar studied chemistry there at Benue State University. He earned his PhD at the University of London; he then moved to Massachusetts where he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology.

“It was my teachers in Nigeria that drove my interest in drug discovery and development,” he said.

Dawn relied on family and God to beat breast cancer: http://bit.ly/dawnpritchett. Please share! #ICQB

I got an email from a very inspirational person this weekend, Dawn. Her story is certainly one of hope and encouragement. It goes to show how important family is in our times of need. Oh yeah… and I learned a new phrase: cancerversary! Please read below and share Dawn’s lovely story:

Hello! My name is Dawn and I am a breast cancer survivor.

After being diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma on October 16, 2009, I thought my world was coming to an end!

After many doctor appointments and testing, I was given so many options as for treatment. I was told I would have to take chemo and radiation even if I went with the mastectomy.

I opted for the lumpectomy and I had 12 chemo treatments and 38 radiation treatments. It took 6 months for the chemo.

I thought at that time: “Why am I having to go through this?”. I have no breast cancer history in our family. It was a very difficult 6 months.

I was sick over Christmas…to me that was hard. I had my mom cut my hair and shave my head the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I had my first chemo the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Being a single mom – it worried me being so sick and really not having anyone here but my children to help me. My kids were 17, 16 and 11 at the time…..they were the biggest blessing in my life.

After having all my chemo, I was able to break for 2 weeks. But in May I had my PET scan. It was a nerve wrecking experience… I kept thinking I went through all of this and please Dear Lord, have mercy me.

I got the results the Friday before Mothers day. I am CANCER FREE!!

I asked for a copy of my PET scan results and wrapped them and gave it to my mom for her Birthday/Mothers Day!! That was a very happy day!

I have celebrated my first birthday. I just celebrated my first cancerversary last Saturday.

God has always been my rock!! I thank God for each and every single day, it is a gift.

I started my radiation In June and I went everyday except Saturday and Sunday…..I was beyond excited when I finished the last treatment.

Aftr having 2nd and 3rd degree burning I got shingles on top of that…..I was like OK Lord..what now? But through it all, my God was right there.

I am very blessed and take nothing for granted.

There is HOPE and never loose FAITH! Phil. 4:13 got me through some pretty hard times.

I can do all things through CHRIST who STRENGTHENS me!

I am just thankful for my family being my eyes and ears for the first half of my diagnoses…..that was a lot to absorb and it took a long time for me to deal with.

After praying and giving it to God, it all just fell into place. Stay positive and never loose hope!!

Here is the message I sent back to Dawn:

Dear Dawn,

Happy Cancerversary! What a wonderful term. I am sure that it is such a relief to have made it through that first year – and I know that the years will keep coming! My sister in law is still within her 5 years after getting rid of her breast cancer… so I understand how important each year is.

Your story was very inspirational – thank you so much for sharing!

Debbie shares her story of breast cancer survival (warning – grab kleenex before reading)

My new friend, Debbie, sent me her breast cancer story this weekend and it is a tear-jerker. Plus it includes a wonderful quote: “The cancer was easy, believe it or not.” Please read below and share her wonderful story of survival:

MY NAME IS DEBBIE MCKENNEY and on Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 I had a mammogram.

On September 4th, I had my first apt with my surgeon and he requested to do a biopsy on Sept 10.

I had follow up with my surgeon – and that day changed my life forever. He told me it was cancer and that I needed a mastectomy of the right breast as soon as possible. I had a bi lateral mastectomy.

The news that was shared with my family was it was not in my lymph nodes and that I would only have to take oral chemo.

I was OK (if there is anything OK about cancer).

I went back to see my surgeon only to get the bad news that my pathology report was misread and that the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes. They took out 14 lymph nodes – but it had spread into 3 more, which now meant full blown chemo.

On Thanksgiving day 2007, I hit a piece of black ice which sent me into a ditch. My car flipped over and the top ripped right off. My face hit a fire hydrant.

I had never been in so much pain in my entire life. It was so bad that it took 4 days of surgery. The surgeon claimed that I was his worse case ever (that survived).

He put 7 plates under my left eye, 7 plates in my left jaw and 5 plates in my right jaw.

I had surgery on my 50th birthday.

Because of chemo I had MORE surgeries AND AS OF TODAY OCTOBER 24th, 2010 I NOW HAVE HAD 30 SURGERIES THAT I CAN REMEMBER.

I AM A SURVIVOR AND WANT TO TELL THE WORLD MY STORY!

THE CANCER WAS EASY, BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

SINCE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, I HAVE FOUND THAT IT TOUCHES ALMOST EVERYONE IN OUR LIVES (ONE WAY OR ANOTHER).

PLUS, NOW IT IS EFFECTING SO MANY MEN AS WELL.

LET’S WORK TOGETHER AND KILL CANCER INSTEAD OF IT KILLING US!

How to save lives

In the 6th grade, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up: a Superhero. 23 years later, I am finally ready to live up to my childhood aspiration and start saving lives.

How do I plan on accomplishing this heroic task? By launching a social game at http://boo.bs that will raise money for breast cancer charities. Need a way to conceptualize the project? Think: Farmville… but focused on boobs instead of crops.

That’s right, I said “boobs”. All men love them and all women have them. If you fall into one of these two categories, then you probably despise the mortal enemy of boobs, breast cancer, as much as I do.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

My grandmother, the most amazing woman in the world, had breast cancer and had to go through radiation and get a mastectomy as a result. Due to early detection, she was able to beat the disease and she lived for another 7 years. I cherish those 7 years with all of my heart.

More recently, I had to have a lump removed from my chest in fear of breast cancer (yup, it turns out that men can get breast cancer too).

These experiences have made me fighting mad and as a result, I am putting all of my time and energy towards making a difference. http://boo.bs loves lightsabers and Chewbacca (hates breast cancer) #ICQB

Last night, I made up a new pet-name for my girlfriend: Chewbacca (well, she is Spanish – so really the name is Chewbaccito). Bear with me, there is a point to this, I promise.

I could tell – at first – that she didn’t really like her new pet-name. Then I explained that if she was Chewbaccito, then that would make me Han Solo. That means that we would NEVER be apart. It also means that I would do ANYTHING to protect her – no matter how bad things got.

Obviously, I am a fanboy. Guilty. However, my larger point is that my girlfriend means the world to me. She is one of the primary reasons that I started the http://boo.bs project. A while ago, she started feeling a lump in her left breast. Long story short – she got tested and she doesn’t have breast cancer. However, the anxiety and fear that she went through during the period that we were unsure was intense.

As her protector – I felt helpless. If this was a Star Wars movie, I would protect her from all evil – including breast cancer – with my lightsaber. Day and night.

The social game I am building at http://boo.bs is my way to not only protect my loved ones – but your loved ones as well. As people play the game, money will be raised for breast cancer charities. Hopefully, as advances are made in the fight against breast cancer, your girlfriends, mothers, grandmothers and daughters won’t need to go through anxiety and fear that my girlfriend did.

Dear Breast Cancer, Why don’t you pick on someone your own size? http://boo.bs #ICQB

I am a warrior. Literally. When I was born, my mother traced my Hawaiian ancestry to King Kamehameha – who united the Hawaiian island under one kingdom. She then named me after the king’s cousin – who was famous as a runner and fighter. His primary task was to run across the island to deliver war messages. Growing up, I played every sport imaginable and to this day I spend countless hours in the gym. 5 times a week, I do mixed martial arts training at True Warrior Fitness in Hollywood. Trust me – I am a warrior.

However, with all of my strength – I could not prevent my grandmother from getting breast cancer.

Warriors are not known to quit. Ever since my grandmother went through radiation and had to get a mastectomy – I have felt a strange connection to breast cancer and an intense desire to destroy it.

This is why I am developing a social game at http://boo.bs to raise money for breast cancer charities. You see, I may not be strong enough to beat breast cancer on my own – but real wars are fought in numbers. Together, we can become as big as the disease itself (or bigger) and destroy it.

Kelly shares her inspirational breast cancer story with http://boo.bs. Please share! #ICQB

I asked my new Facebook friend, Kelly, to share her story. It is touching belong belief. Please give it a read and help me share her inspirational story:

A couple of years ago in late February, of 2008 I fexperienced severe pain and discovered an indention like lump in my right breast, I totally ignored it being as I was getting ready to go on vacation to Seattle, WA to visit friends/family. I kept on expereiencing pain and everyone kept telling me to call doctor back home to schedule a mammogram. I chose not to until I got home when pain was really getting to me, I then went in immediately to my doctor who said it was probably best for me to have it checked further. After a mammogram was ordered I went on and had one performed by the mammographer, who turned out to be my exboyfriend’s sister in law. She then told me I would need an ultrasound and was told I needed to see a surgeon for a biopsy. The surgeon insisted it was what he thought would be best to remove the tumor and my lymph nodes. I was scared out of my mind but Pat was with me for everything.

A few days later the fateful call came, it was the surgeons office, calling to tell me that I had cancer again. You see this is not my first time to experience cancer, I have had ovarian and cervical back when I was in my early 20′s.

I then had my surgery just 8 days before I turned 38. Talk about no fun but I had no choice being as the cancer was very aggressive and my tumor was so large. I had Pat by my side and my exboyfriend, Robert Garcia as well as my lawyer, David Bonilla all rooting for me that I would be fine. I hat to have a bilateral radical masectomy and then had to go through the ordeal of chemotherapy and all that “FUN” stuff.. I couldn’t do all the chemo being as it made me physically sick and drained me, but I did all I could do. Pat, Robert and David were all by my side encouraging me that i would be fine. Then in Februay of 2009, I noticed what I thought was a pimple or something on my chest wall, so I immediately called my doctor and went in and he performed a biopsy again and learned I had a recurrence. I then was told to go to MDAnderson in Houston. Texas to undergo radiation for 8-10 weeks, twice daily.

Hearing the word “cancer” is such a scary thing, but it doesn’tmean that your life is over. To me it means, I CAN and will survive. There is no CAN’T in CANCER it is CAN.

If anything cancer has allowed me to live. I have been given a gift of knowing how fragile life can be, hearing that I had cancer again has really opened my eyes to this gift.

I don’t take for granted all the things I used to, I appreciate everyday I have. I was given an opportunity to see how much I am loved, how many people care for me, it is an amazing thing.

I don’t sit around thinking about what COULD happen, I live in the now. Keeping a positive attitude is so important. Not all days are perfect, but I know that tomorrow will be better.

Having been diagnosed with cervical and ovarian cancer in the past and breast cancer, has made me stronger. I know what I don’t want to happen, so I fight to keep my life as normal as possible. Not allowing these diseases to take over is what keeps me fighting, I will not allow them to beat me.

Having had cancer has made me a survivor, I think we are all survivors. We all have adversity to overcome. How we chose to handle it is what defines our character.

There will be many more obstacles in my life, many more bumps in the road, I will take each as they come, I will face them all head on, fight with all of my being, because I know I have something to fight for. I see how life can be fragile, but each difficult moment has the potential to open my eyes even more and more every day and live life to the fullest in the NOW not in the PAST.

I came across a wonderful site today on Facebook – called Worldwidebreastcancer.com.

This is honestly the best breast cancer website I have seen out there. It is fun AND informative (which is not an easy thing to pull off). Plus, it is very well designed (being a designer myself – I should know).

I often get asked “Who is your inspiration?” when I talk about the social game I am developing at http://boo.bs.

The http://boo.bs project is actually inspired by a few people. My grandmother (Nanny)… the most amazing woman in the world… had breast cancer. She had to go through radiation and get a mastectomy to beat her breast cancer.

More recently, I had to have a lump removed from my chest in fear of breast cancer. Yup, it turns out men can get breast cancer too.

Most recently, my girlfriend kept feeling a small lump in her left breast. This was the scariest situation of all. She means the world to me and I never want to lose her. I also don’t want other people and their loved ones to go through these scary situations. BTW: My girlfriend got tested and she is cancer free. I feel very blessed.

Cheryl shares her inspirational breast cancer story with http://boo.bs. #ICQB

I have been asking people for their breast cancer stories and have been sending them free clothing in exchange (to help promote the social game I am building at http://boo.bs to fight breast cancer). This experience has been transcending to say the least. In the process, I have made new friends and heard amazing stories. Cheryl’s story is nothing short of tear-jerking and awe-inspiring. Here it is in her own words:

A couple of years ago I found a lump in my breast, I went in immediately to my doctor who said it was probably nothing, but to have it checked further. After a mammogram and ultrasound, I was told I needed to see a surgeon for a biopsy. The surgeon insisted it was nothing, but said he thought it would be best to remove it.

The surgery was uneventful and I went home that same day.

A few days later the fateful call came, it was the surgeons office, calling to tell me that I had cancer.

I had a couple of surgeries and many procedures. Underwent radiation for 6 weeks, daily.

My pathology report was full of precancerous cells and cancer.

At the time I chose to follow the oncologists orders, without researching on my own.

After spending two years worrying about the cancer coming back every time I felt a lump, I have decided to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction.  Hearing the word “cancer” is such a scary thing, but it doesn’t mean that your life is over.

If anything cancer has allowed me to live. I have been given a gift of knowing how fragile life can be, hearing that I had cancer opened my eyes to this gift.

I don’t take for granted all the things I used to, I appreciate everyday I have. I was given an opportunity to see how much I am loved, how many people care for me, it is an amazing thing.

I don’t sit around thinking about what COULD happen, I live in the now. Keeping a positive attitude is so important. Not all days are perfect, but I know that tomorrow will be better.

I had a great response to my “free clothing for your breast cancer stories” and I also had a few questions. Here as an attempt at simplifying my request:

Basically – I am looking for people to create videos of how breast cancer affected their lives positively (to give those struggling with the disease hope). In exchange, I will send you free clothing.

I just had the nicest chat with a new friend – Kelly. She is from Texas and I LOVE people from Texas. They are seriously the nicest people in the world. Although our chat was brief – I can tell that Kelly is a kind-hearted soul. Need proof? This is what she has written on her profile:

“Having cancer again changed my life. I’m grateful for every new, healthy day I have. It has helped me prioritize my life and fight to win and survive. So to everyone out there, in honor of “Pinkoctober”, FIGHT the battle and you, too will win and survive.”

I truly admire people who spread hope and good vibes. In fact, today I am starting a campaign to help bring hope and good vibes to those struggling with breast cancer. Basically, I am giving away free clothing to my friends on Facebook in exchange for their videos on how breast cancer somehow brought a positive change to their lives. The first friend I am going to offer this to: Kelly.

Hopefully this will bring some attention to the social game I am developing at http://boo.bs.

Now that we are knee-deep in October – it is wonderful to see everything turn pink. I walked into the supermarket on Saturday morning to buy my girlfriend some flowers for our new apartment and I was struck by a wave of pink. Pink balloons, pink food, pink flowers, pink cards. I usually buy her white flowers to match our stark white/black/red decor… but I had to make an exception and buy pink gladiolus.

I am glad that an entire month has been dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer. Plus – I get a kick out of watching everybody in the NFL wearing pink on the first Sunday of October.

Men, women http://boo.bs cancer survivors photographed: (http://bit.ly/dh5CJj) #ICQB

Wow – this is cool. I love photography… particularly black and white photography. I also love anybody who goes out of their way to bring hope to those struggling with breast cancer. On top of all that – this photographer (David Fox – check out his website at www.davidfoxphotographer.com), also includes men in his photos of breast cancer survivors.

I never had breast cancer but I had a breast cancer scare and had a lump removed from my chest – leaving a scar I have been embarassed about… until now. Looking at these photos of breast cancer survivors puts things in a new light. I never had to go through everything they had to in order to survive… so yes, it is time for me to put my vanity aside.

My scare – however – made me change my perspective on what I should be doing with my life. I want to be saving people from this terible disease. ” Where do you look first, at their faces or their scars?

Photographer David Fox’s portraits of breast cancer survivors offer a bracing view of battling cancer, but, more importantly, they also put a face on the disease.

Face first or scar first? It doesn’t matter. It’s where the gaze lingers longest that’s significant, and that’s in their eyes and in their smiles. You’re moved by their plight, touched by their defiance, uplifted by their expressions of joy and warmed by the touches of love and support that infuse so many of the frames.

You see it in the loving gaze of a child looking up at her surviving mother –– too young to fully understand the battle she’s waging, but old enough to realize how deeply she loves her mom.

“I wanted to show hope,” says Fox from Brookline, Mass., whose “Illuminating the Survivor Spirit; A Photographic Journey” project continues to expand and evolve. “The beauty of the person, the ugliness of the disease.”

Fox’s photos — more than 70 and counting — support the Art beCAUSE Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 2000 by Ellie Anbinder to raise funds for research dedicated to eradicating environmental causes of breast cancer.

Fox’s photos have helped tell the story with a 2010 calendar that benefited the foundation, a gallery exhibit at the New England Art Institute in Brookline and a new calendar for 2011 that tells a lesser-known part of the war on breast cancer: men with breast cancer.

The calendar, “Men, Breast Cancer and the Environment,” will be released on Oct. 1, kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“David’s photographs help us put a face on what breast cancer looks like — female and male,” says Anbinder. “His work is extremely sensitive and revealing.”

Fox’s journey to Art beCAUSE and his cancer survivor portraits began with a dreadful first step: his wife, Toby, was diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago. Sadly, she died from the disease in 1991, at the age of 34.

Suddenly, Fox was a single dad raising two kids, 4-years-old and 1-year-old.

But, “after some soul-searching,” he knew he wanted to do something in the fight against breast cancer. Sparked by a National Breast Cancer Coalition project that featured photographs of women who had died from the disease, Fox hatched a similar idea, but with a twist:

“I wanted to photograph people who were alive,” said Fox.

When Anbinder was looking for a concept for her Art beCAUSE fundraiser about two years ago, Fox’s portrait idea resurfaced.

“You know what?” Anbinder told Fox. “It’s time to do it.”

It was uncharted territory for Fox and his subjects.

“I approached it from the point of view that this is what I do every day –– I’m a portrait photographer,” he says. “It’s about capturing their spirit, their essence … I needed to get to know them, so I had about a five-minute conversation with them before taking any pictures. ‘What has this experience been like?’ ‘Why did you want to be part of the photo project?’”

For many of them, “this was an important part of the journey,” said Fox.

His only request to his subjects: Bring something or someone who’s important to you.”

I just got a message on Facebook from a kind woman asking me if I am a fighter or a 3-day walker. I didn’t know how to answer that… here was my answer:

“Hmmm… I guess I would call myself a fighter… indirectly. I had a lump removed from my chest which turned out to not be cancer… however it made me very sympathetic to those who have the disease. My grandmother had breast cancer and my girlfriend just had a breast cancer scare (her lump was also not cancerous).

The thing is – I kind of wish I could say I was a 3-day walker. I tried to convince my girlfriend to do it in SF with me… but she wasn’t prepared for it yet physically. I think we are going to plan ahead for a 3-day walk next year.

Here is a lead-in for an article about those who did join the race for the cure:

“The people gathered in front of the white tent Saturday morning were of all ages and races – and all were wearing pink.

Like a small parade, hundreds of breast cancer survivors waving pink-and-white pompoms and wearing pink T-shirts marched to the main stage to kick off the survivor ceremony during Tulsa’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure event in front of CityPlex Towers.

This is the eighth year Heather Cobb has participated in Tulsa’s event. She first started coming for her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31. Then six years ago, when Cobb was just 28, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It’s a wonderful group of women. It’s the best sisterhood to get involved in, but it has the worst initiation process,” said Cobb, who is now the affiliate leader of Young Survival Coalition Tulsa.

“Doctors tell women, don’t worry about it, you’re too young,” she said. “It does happen. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.”

This is the 14th year for the Tulsa event, which has grown every year, said Christy Southard, executive director of the Tulsa affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

This year 12,000 people registered for one of the three races – timed 5K, untimed 5K and 1-mile fun run – with 2,000 to 3,000 more people there to support those participating, Southard said.

The first year Southard volunteered with the Tulsa race in 2003, only 6,200 people were registered, she said.

“In that time we’ve doubled
fundraising and participation,” Southard said.

Last year’s event raised $775,000 for breast cancer research.

Cobb, who has participated in more than half of the Tulsa races, said she’s also noticed the event’s growth.

“It’s gotten so much bigger. Unfortunately, I’ve seen more young faces with pink shirts on,” she said.”
